On June 20th 2013, the European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, was interviewed by the Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) on behalf of the MERMAID project.
The Commissioner highlighted the contribution of the MERMAID project to the development of a thriving maritime economy, in an environmentally sustainable manner. Furthermore, Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn stressed the importance of the smart use of marine space and making offshore platforms economically viable. The Commissioner highly appreciated the multidisciplinary approach of the MERMAID project, as well as the interaction with partners from industry and stakeholders.
The interview will be incorporated in the MERMAID dissemination movie (due at the end of 2013) and will undoubtedly add to the strategic importance of the MERMAID concept.
The international Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) launched the world's first open-access global atlas of renewable energy resources. The atlas is now available at: http://www.irena.org/News/Description.aspx?NType=NWS&PriMenuID=16&mnu=Pri&News_ID=280. It currently charts solar and wind resources, and will expand to other forms of renewable energy over 2013 and 2014, the agency announced."
The project “Seabed and Wind Farm Interaction”, a 4.5-year research program financed by the Danish Council for Strategic Research, and undertaken by a Consortium of five institutes, held a successful End User Workshop on May 15, 2012, organized jointly by the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) and the Danish Society of Marin Civil Engineering. The venue was DTU. Over 70 people, both from industry and academia, participated in the one-day event. The City of Oostende, at the heart of Belgium’s coast, will proudly host the 11th LITTORAL conference, the biannual international conference of the Coastal and Marine Union – EUCC and EUROCOAST, from 27 – 29 November 2012. Coastal practitioners, researchers and policy makers are invited to register and participate at this year's conference.
The program is packed with interesting keynotes, sessions, workshops a showcase exhibition and a high level debate. During the session on coastal infrastructures, the MERMAID project will be presented.
